Ancestral Peace, Modern Home

The environmental secrets of

hunter-gatherer life for a calmer home

I used to wonder why talk therapy and communication tools often don’t bring lasting peace at home. Then I found a missing piece:

the space we live in.

A room-by-room guide. Read it alone or as a family.

 You’ve tried talking it through.

The same fights still come back.

You’ve read the books. You’ve learned the phrases. Maybe you’ve tried therapy. But the arguments keep returning at the door, at dinner, at bedtime.

It may not be that you’re doing it wrong. Your home can either add to the tension or help calm it. Most of us were never shown how to set it up for calm.

“Why look back at hunter-gatherers?”

For most of human history, people lived in small groups, outdoors, close together. Our bodies and nervous systems developed in those conditions.

Of course, life wasn’t easy for people in more recent times. But before that, a few simple things helped people get along:

  • Seeing each other clearly

  • Gathering around a shared fire

  • Following the rhythm of the sun

  • Having cool, quiet places to retreat

  • Many modern homes remove these cues without us noticing. This guide helps you bring them back.

Our bodies haven’t changed much since then. We still need these things.

However, many homes today are missing them. Rooms are closed off. Screens glow late at night. There is nowhere calm to go. When that happens, small things turn into big arguments.

Yet the good thing is that we can bring these things back, one room at a time.

I learned firsthand how much our surroundings affect us. When I changed my diet, my joint pain eased, my anxiety settled, and my brain fog lifted. Before that, my hands hurt so much I couldn’t type a sentence.

My wife, Tricia, is an M.D., and I deeply respect modern medicine. It took her courage to look at my whole environment, not just my symptoms.

Family work is the same. Tools like EFT, Gottman, and DBT are valuable. But if your home works against you, you’re working uphill.

We couldn’t find a guide that connected these ideas to modern homes. So my colleague, Elora, and I combined psychology and environmental design to build one.

What’s inside

Ancestral Peace, Modern Home

  • Front yard and porch: Pause on the steps before you go in, so the day’s stress stays at the door

  • Entryway and living area: Hooks, a bench, and a clear path out. Then seats around a fire, with books and games instead of screens

  • Kitchen and dining: No one cooks alone. One big table in the middle, like the campfire

  • Bedroom: A quiet, simple room that follows the sun. Phones stay out for the night

  • Bathroom: A bright, calm place to pause and cool down

  • Your Home Reset To-Do List: Quick actions for today. Bigger changes for later

Every room page shows how the room can look, with “Try this at home” steps.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to renovate?

No. Start with the “Today” list. The bigger changes are for later,

and only if you want them.

Will this work in a small space or a rental?

Yes. Most ideas are about how you use a space, like a phone basket,

a bare counter, or open blinds.

Is this therapy?

No. It’s an educational guide. It does not replace professional care.

Who is it for?

Parents and families.
